Can't... .stop.... laughing......

Veterans Day

  • Nov. 11th, 2009 at 10:47 PM
Drove to the library today and walked up to the front only to see that it was closed for Veterans Day. As I was walking back to my car, another guy was walking towards the library and I told him the it was closed. His reaction?

"

BASTARDS!!!

Veterans don't work at the library! It's just a bunch of old ladies!"

Maybe you had to be there for this, but it was about the damn funniest thing I'd heard in quite a while.

November 11th, 2009: Here is some exciting news that Laura the Zoologist sent to me! Do you have something gross lying around your house? Of course you do. Well, it turns out that you can now get a free scanning electron micrograph of ANYTHING. Fill out a form, send in your object sample, and they'll post the result on their site!

Guys we all have to do this!

November 10th, 2009: In yesterday's comic T-Rex and Utahraptor talked about self-charging mp3 players (before everyone died) (quite a bit before everyone died). Utahraptor said "There are physical limits to what a -" before he was interrupted by T-Rex. If he'd been allowed to continue he would have said "There are physical limits to what a device such as that can do, and it wouldn't be enough, as I said earlier - assuming of course that the person lives a sedate lifestyle and barely uses their legs."

I say this because it turns out that people are ALREADY working on T-Rex's invention! In fact, they're such great people that they started working on it even before he invented it, and that's really something. Thank you everyone who sent me links to this Science Daily article and this NPR story. I even got some emails from researchers working on this very problem, which was kind of crazy, because I hadn't expected that! It made me think that if I'd written a comic about how you can converse in English with your dogs now instead, we'd all be waking up today to a world where, come Christmas 2009, a Dog Talker will be on the top of everyone's list!

Anyway that sounds pretty good to me!

UPDATE: Guys it turns out that dog translators exist, I am going to think really hard about what my third invention will be before posting it here; I don't want to waste it.

UPDATE 2: Okay the idea of using breasts as a power source was just a stray thought, I didn't mean for it to come true! I need to get a handle on controlling this new-found power.

Hey, look, a real update!

  • Nov. 8th, 2009 at 9:28 PM
I think I've been promising one of these since May. I guess it's time to actually deliver. However, since it's been such a long time, I'm going to give more of the highlights version in a vague semblance of a something like an order:

-I interned at the Folger Theatre in DC (attached to the Folger Shakespeare Library) over the summer. That went very well, and I made some great contacts and learned a fair amount. I also did some amazingly tedious and mind numbing busy work. But, hey, that's what interns are for.
-I was in The Merchant of Venice with the Jewish Theatre Workshop in Baltimore in August. The show was well received and though there are some elements that I thought would have been more effective if done differently, I was very happy to get into a show right out of college. Also I ended up working as the Master Electrician for the show and redid their fight choreography to be both safer and look better.
-I started dating one of my friends who's a senior at Goucher. That's been going very well.
-I started at the Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company, also in DC, as the Assistant to the General Manager. This is going well, and I'm once again making good contacts and learning a lot about the business end of running a theatre. I do wish it paid better though.
-My own theatre company (The Box Colony Theatre Company - look us up on Facebook; main website to be finished soon!) incorporated and has started planning for our first production, which we are currently hoping to be at the New York Fringe Festival, this coming August. We are also shortly applying for non-profit status. Then all your donations will be fully tax deductible!
-I was a groomsman at and 's wedding, which was beautiful and I'm so happy to have been a part of it.
-I worked at Badger Blades at the MD Renaissance Faire again this year, and it was a blast, as usual. Hopefully I can find a way to work again next year, despite planning on living up in NJ.
-I went to my cousin Becky's wedding out in San Diego a few weeks ago. That was also beautiful and it was great reconnecting with family, most of whom I hadn't seen in 9+ years.
-I did the fight choreography for the Jewish Theatre Workshop's production of Art which was performed at the beginning of the month. I will probably (unless I get another job - that y'know, pays) be doing the lighting design for their upcoming production of The Importance of Being Ernest.
-I still haven't been able to find a bartending job. This is very sad.
-I think it's time for another mention of my main focus for the future: The Box Colony Theatre Company.

I think that's about everything major...Hopefully it won't be another like 5 months before my next real update. We'll see.

November 6th, 2009: I mentioned I like out-of-genre cover songs and you guys sent me so many out of genre cover songs! THIS IS EXCELLENT. I also like money and solid gold cars you guys!

Here's some of the cream of the crop! The Baseballs do 50-style covers of modern music, and Umbrella has a great video to go with it.. It's a window into a universe where rock and roll never stopped rockin' and rollin'!

Kate Nash has done a few of these (and she's got a great voice!), Hollaback Girl is one of my favourites. Amanda Palmer does Creep on the ukulele, and here's Karen Souza doing a sexy lounge version of the same. And I've linked to her before, but fellow Torontoian Kay Pettigrew's cover of the Fresh Prince of Bel Air theme is totally rad.

With more irony we've got Jenny Owen Youngs doing "Hot in Herre", and you're probably already familiar with Alanis doing My Humps, Mat Weddle doing Hey Yah, and The BossHoss who do pop music "in the original country and western" and who I've even seen live! How about we go with I Say A Little Prayer from them.

Anyway hooray for music that sounds like other music!

November 5th, 2009: I think I have a "thing", and this "thing" is for hip young women singing out-of-genre covers of pop songs with a pure sincerity that completely transcends irony. Enjoy Molly Lewis doing Poker Face and Pomplamoose doing September. Enjoy them knowing that I just listen to them back to back, one after the other, over and over again!

GIRL 1: "I feel like we've been on this bus forever."

*long pause*

GIRL 2: "I don't feel that way."

*long pause*

GIRL 2: "I see what you mean, though."

Same bus, same girls, same dreamy, deepest-conversation-ever tone:

GIRL 1: "I wish I wasn't on fire."
